From script to screen in six steps

There is no length cap in the editor. Because films are assembled shot by shot, how long a piece can run comes down to how many clips your plan includes — not a limit in the tool.

It varies enormously by project scale. A major studio film may have 6 to 18 months of pre-production. An indie feature might have 2 to 4 months. A short film or commercial may need 2 to 6 weeks. The key is allowing enough time to plan thoroughly rather than rushing to set unprepared.

Script development is generally considered the most critical step because every other decision flows from the script. However, storyboarding and shot planning are the steps most frequently skipped by inexperienced filmmakers, and their absence causes the most preventable problems on set.
