What screenplay format actually requires

Screenplay format isn't arbitrary — it evolved so that one page equals roughly one minute of screen time. Deviating from the format breaks that contract and reader timing expectations.

  • Font: Courier or Courier Prime, 12pt
  • Page margins: 1.5" left, 1" elsewhere
  • Sluglines (scene headings) in CAPS
  • Action lines in present tense
  • Character cues centered, dialogue indented
  • Transitions right-aligned (FADE OUT, CUT TO)

Screenplay template formats we offer

  • Google Docs screenplay template

Free, shareable, cloud-backed. Preconfigured with proper styles for sluglines, action, dialogue, and transitions. The default for most indie and spec writers.

  • Microsoft Word / .docx template

Same styling, offline-compatible. Good if your writers' room or producer prefers Word.

  • Final Draft / Celtx-compatible

For writers already using professional screenwriting software. Formats import cleanly between tools.

  • PDF (read-only)

For sharing a reference of industry-standard format without the editable file — useful for classrooms and workshops.

How long a screenplay should run

  • Short film: 1–15 pages (1–15 minutes)

Festival shorts typically run 5–15 pages. Each page converts to roughly a minute of screen time in the properly-formatted template.

  • Feature film: 90–120 pages

Comedies skew shorter (90–100), dramas longer (110–120). Over 120 pages signals a first-time writer doesn't understand the format.

  • Half-hour TV: 22–30 pages

Network sitcom: 22–24. Single-cam half-hour: 28–32. Streaming: varies, often longer.

  • Hour-long TV: 50–65 pages

Network drama: 50–55. Cable/streaming: 55–65. Varies by network but stay in the range.

Feature FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Screenplay Template

Answers tailored to this workflow, setup, and production usage.

Yes. Free Google Docs, Word, and PDF templates available. No signup required for base templates. M Studio account unlocks AI-assisted screenplay generation from loglines.

Courier or Courier Prime, 12 point. Monospaced so that one page of correctly-formatted screenplay equals approximately one minute of finished screen time. Don't use Times New Roman or Arial — it throws off page-to-minute timing readers rely on.

Yes. M Studio's AI screenplay generator outputs properly-formatted screenplays from a logline or story concept. Scene headings, action, dialogue, and shot notes are structured so you can edit for story instead of fixing formatting.

Google Docs is fine for spec scripts and short films. Final Draft (or Celtx, WriterDuet, Fade In) has pagination and automatic formatting features that save time on longer projects. Professional paid writing rooms usually use one of those.

Paste your screenplay into M Studio and the AI storyboard generator converts each scene into visual storyboard frames with consistent characters, shot descriptions, and camera direction. You keep the text screenplay as the source of truth; the storyboard renders alongside it.
