What screenplay format actually requires
Screenplay format isn't arbitrary — it evolved so that one page equals roughly one minute of screen time. Deviating from the format breaks that contract and reader timing expectations.

Short film: 1–15 pages (1–15 minutes)
Festival shorts typically run 5–15 pages. Each page converts to roughly a minute of screen time in the properly-formatted template.

Comedies skew shorter (90–100), dramas longer (110–120). Over 120 pages signals a first-time writer doesn't understand the format.
