What screenplay format actually requires
Screenplay format isn't arbitrary — it evolved so that one page equals roughly one minute of screen time. Deviating from the format breaks that contract and reader timing expectations.
- Font: Courier or Courier Prime, 12pt — Monospaced font is the standard. Every character takes the same horizontal space. This is what makes one page = one minute work.
- Page margins: 1.5" left, 1" elsewhere — Left margin is wider to accommodate hole-punching in production binders. Don't narrow it to save space — readers will notice.
- Sluglines (scene headings) in CAPS — INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY. Always INT/EXT, location, time-of-day. All caps. First line of every scene.
- Action lines in present tense — John walks in. He sees Mary at the counter. Not walked, not will walk. Present tense, active voice, visible action only.
- Character cues centered, dialogue indented — Character name ~3.7" from left margin, dialogue block indented slightly. Parentheticals (whispering) on their own line under the character cue when tone changes.
- Transitions right-aligned (FADE OUT, CUT TO) — Minimize these. A good screenplay almost never specifies cuts — they're the editor's and director's call, not the writer's.

How long a screenplay should run
- Short film: 1–15 pages (1–15 minutes) — Festival shorts typically run 5–15 pages. Each page converts to roughly a minute of screen time in the properly-formatted template.
- Feature film: 90–120 pages — Comedies skew shorter (90–100), dramas longer (110–120). Over 120 pages signals a first-time writer doesn't understand the format.
- Half-hour TV: 22–30 pages — Network sitcom: 22–24. Single-cam half-hour: 28–32. Streaming: varies, often longer.
- Hour-long TV: 50–65 pages — Network drama: 50–55. Cable/streaming: 55–65. Varies by network but stay in the range.
