Audio Mixing Basics
Balance your voiceover, music, and sound effects for a professional mix.
Understanding the Timeline Tracks
The timeline has four audio lanes:
- Frame audio - Embedded in video clips
- Voiceover - Narration and dialogue
- Music - Background music
- SFX - Sound effects
Adjusting Volume
Select any audio clip to adjust:
- Volume slider - Overall level
- Fade in - Gradual start
- Fade out - Gradual end
Volume Guidelines
| Track Type | Recommended Level |
|---|---|
| Voiceover | 0 dB (reference) |
| Music (behind VO) | -12 to -18 dB |
| Music (no VO) | -6 to -9 dB |
| SFX (emphasis) | -3 to -6 dB |
| SFX (ambient) | -12 to -18 dB |
Creating Fades
Fade In: Set the fade duration at the start of a clip. Music usually fades in over 1-3 seconds.
Fade Out: Set the fade duration at the end. Match the emotional moment - quick for sudden endings, slow for gentle conclusions.
Ducking
When voiceover plays over music:
- Select the music clip
- Lower the volume for that section
- Or create a separate clip with lower volume
Mute and Solo
- Mute - Silence a track temporarily
- Solo - Hear only that track
Use these to focus on specific elements while mixing.
Export Preview
Always preview your full mix before exporting:
- Play from the beginning
- Listen for volume issues
- Check that dialogue is clear
- Ensure music doesn't overpower
